The "classic" period
In the first two decades of the 19th century, the theaters at Pariser Boulevard du Temple, some of which owned large ballet ensembles, very successful with mixed forms of ballet, theater, mime and circus. The mythological ballets der Paris Opera became old-fashioned and the Opéra had to adapt to the tastes of the public, who either wanted realistic material or holidays preferred. In the opera La muette de Portici (1828) a mute protagonist appeared, much like in the products of the boulevard theaters wie Yelva, the Russian orphan (1828). Such silent roles were often interpreted by dancers. In the same year, the opera included the ballet La fille mal gardée in a modernized version.
